Ahoy, Mateys! Are you ready for the adventure of a lifetime? The Portland Science Center is bringing National Geographic’s Real Pirates exhibition to Portland, ME this summer.
The Portland Science Center is dedicated to providing a complete picture of human history by offering the most engaging and unique traveling attractions ever presented. It’s poised to serve as Maine’s leading destination for learning and exploration through their blockbuster exhibitions, like Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, Dinosaurs Unearthed, and Body Worlds.
Now, as you walk through the interactive Real Pirates exhibition, you can experience what it feels like to be an actual pirate! Get up close to the first fully authenticated pirate ship ever discovered in U.S. waters, and touch some of the 150 artifacts that have been recovered from the ocean floor over the past thirty years since its discovery.
Immerse yourself in true pirate culture as you wander through the 10,000 square-foot interactive exhibit that features over 150 artifacts, ranging from everyday objects like dishes and tools, to personal items like buttons and buckles, to real treasure chests overflowing with treasure and jewelry. Check out the advanced weaponry of the time, including eighteenth century cannons and cannonballs, pistols, and swords.
Then, experience the fascinating history of the three-masted, 300-ton Whydah, a slave ship turned pirate ship. Learn how, even though the Whydah was equipped with some of the most advanced ocean-sailing technology of its day, a powerful nor’easter off the coast of Cape Cod was able to sink the pirate ship in 1717, along with 144 passengers and all of its treasure.
Don’t forget to examine the maps, texts, video and audio displays telling the true story of famous outlaw pirates, like Captain “Black Sam” Bellamy, and John King, the youngest pirate on board the ship.
To join in on the adventure, get your Real Pirates tickets now until October 29!
“We are very excited to present Real Pirates, a National Geographic Exhibition.  Real Pirates tells the true story of the Whydah, a pirate ship that sank off the coast of Cape Cod 300 years ago. This authentic exhibit fits perfectly with the maritime heritage of Portland and New England.” – Joe Gold, President Portland Science Center
