Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts is hosting the third annual Flamenco Festival this spring with brilliant performances to introduce you to the art of Flamenco! Kick off the weekend with a performance featuring the duo Ulrika Frank and Marija Temo on Friday March 23, 2012. Their collaborative performance will dazzle you and your friends as they take their classic and contemporary styles to a new level. Talent, improvisation, and audience interaction will make this a performance you won’t forget.
On Saturday night, enjoy a Flamenco Fiesta on March 24 featuring Michael “Miguelito” Pérez, one of the premier flamenco guitarists in the United States, who’s made it his mission to educate the masses about flamenco music. Because of this, he is offering a free flamenco guitar class on March 24 at 2 pm in the James W. Black Music Center Recital Hall.
And finally, round off your flamenco-filled spring celebration with a Flamenco Finale on March 25 with Sueños Gitanos, an ensemble that takes traditional Flamenco music and infuses it with jazz, samba and tango. If you aren’t doing the flamenco yourself by the end of the weekend, you’ll just have to practice all year and attend the event next spring!

Mozart and Copland: Choral Masters
March 25 in Pittsburgh, PA
The Mendelssohn Choir, conducted by Betsy Burleigh, will present Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s unfinished Great Mass in C Minor at East Liberty Presbyterian Church. The piece was written by Mozart as appreciation for his marriage, and the life blooming before him. In addition, the Choir will perform Aaron Copland’s In the Beginning. It has been said that Copland’s music is able to define the beauty of America through his music, and what better way to appreciate the beauty than through classical music?
Get your tickets online and save $5 off the door price. Mildred Miller Posvar, the famous mezzo-soprano and founder of Opera Theater of Pittsburgh, will give a free pre-concert talk at 2 pm.
