St. Catharines’ premier indie music festival is right around the corner! On October 5, Cicada Music & Arts Festival returns with a full day of unbelievable music, art, food, and drinks. The best part? Proceeds from the festival are donated to the Movember Foundation of Canada. Read on to learn why this festival is sure to be one that lovers of new and upcoming music won’t want to miss!
This party’s humble beginnings originated in founder Thom Lepp’s own backyard, where it was held for 13 years. Eventually, it grew so large that it changed venues and became Cicada Fest, named after the insects whose buzzing was heard throughout the summer nights in the festival’s birthplace. For five years, Thom held the festival in a variety of different locations, until his prostate cancer diagnosis derailed the return of the festival for a year in 2012. But still he pressed on, once again hosting the festival in his backyard, until he passed away in the Summer of 2017.
Today, the festival has been reborn as Cicada Music & Arts to honor Thom and his love of live music, and it’s truly become so much more than a music festival. The community of the Niagara Region has the opportunity to come together in an all-inclusive, welcoming environment to celebrate live music, arts and culture, craft drinks, and more, and to raise awareness for men’s health. Plus, it’s a place where indie artists and performers can share their unique tastes with a crowd of excited fans and music lovers.
The Cicada Music & Arts Festival has always had an incredible lineup of great Canadian music, and this year is no exception! Headlining will be Joel Plaskett Emergency, hailed as one of Canada’s all-time greatest singer/songwriters. And warming up the stage for him is amazing artists like Shania Twain’s mentee, Logan Staats; multi-horn, multi-drummer, and multi-singer brass funk band My Son The Hurricane; and up-and-coming indie rock band, Basement Revolver.
