Fan Journal: Legally Blonde The Musical

This past Friday, a few of my friends and I had the privilege of attending the sold-out opening night performance of Legally Blonde the Musical, presented by the Pitt Musical Theater Club (MTC). This, like all of their shows, was a free event. MTC put on an incredible show with impressive sets and visuals, especially considering they work exclusively with volunteers and donations.

The play was hosted in the Charity Randall Theatre at the Stephen Foster Memorial, the performing arts center in the heart of Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood. As a University of Pittsburgh student living in South Oakland, the only thing I like more than an amazing free performance, is an amazing free performance that’s only a 15 minute walk from my apartment!

I’m sure we’re all familiar with the movie Legally Blonde: the ditzy, pretty blonde decides to follow her ex to Harvard Law School, only to discover that she has a real knack for legal proceedings, and that her ex is a jerk. I’ll be the first to admit I was weary of witnessing any version of this iconic story that didn’t feature Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods, but this show blew my expectations out of the water. The original score created for the musical is so catchy and fun, especially “Ohmigod You Guys” and “So Much Better.” The show also featured classic scenes from the movie, like The Bend and Snap. And, of course, guess which character was easily the crowd favorite: the UPS guy!

Overall, I had such a fun night watching MTC’s take on Legally Blonde. If you ever get a chance to see one of MTC’s performances, or to see Legally Blonde the Musical, you 100% should!
